Mowing and feeding at the wrong time of year can stress your grass or waste a season of growth. Here's the calendar we follow for the lawns we care for most in Phoenix yards.
Bermuda grass, common across Phoenix, grows fastest from late spring through early summer. Mow weekly during that stretch, never cutting more than a third of the blade at once, and let the height rise slightly as temperatures climb to shade the soil and hold moisture.
Summer is about water discipline. Water deeply and early in the morning, two or three times a week rather than a little every day, so roots grow downward. Skip fertilizing during the hottest weeks; pushing growth in extreme heat only stresses the lawn.
Early fall is the best window for overseeding thin spots and applying a final round of fertilizer before growth slows. Rake out thatch and clear leaves promptly so the turf keeps getting light and air.
Any time of year, keep mower blades sharp, watch for brown patch or drought stress, and adjust your schedule to what the weather is doing. If you're unsure what your lawn needs, we're glad to walk it with you and put together a plan that fits.
