The most common watering mistake we see around Phoenix isn't a broken irrigation system. It's a timer that was set once, years ago, and never changed. Grass needs very different amounts of water in March than it does in July, and a schedule that ignores the seasons either wastes water or lets the lawn go brown.
In spring, Bermuda and other warm-season grasses are waking up and cooler nights mean the soil holds moisture longer. One deep watering a week is usually plenty, and some weeks winter rain does the job for you. Watering too often now trains roots to stay shallow, which hurts when the heat arrives.
From June through September, most lawns need water every day or two, with deep soakings that reach the roots rather than short daily sprinkles. Run zones early in the morning, before 8 a.m., so less is lost to evaporation in the desert air. On our hard, compacted soil, use the cycle-and-soak setting: two or three shorter runs back to back let water sink in instead of running off down the driveway.
In fall, cut back as temperatures drop, and by late November most lawns are dormant or overseeded and need far less. Check any watering restrictions for your neighborhood and adjust, since many Valley cities have seasonal guidelines worth following.
